I wanted an all black pendant light with a unique shade. Didn't want a glass shade or solid shade. This pendant is awesome. Is it modern? Is it retro? It is just plain cool. I do STRONGLY suggest that if you get this pendant, that you use an Edison type / style bulb rather than a regular light buld / soft while light bulb. An Edison bulb....I have a 40 watt Ediison bulb, give a very interesting / dramatic lighting effect in the room. If you want the full effect of this cool pendant and shade use an Edison bulb ! Word of caution. The pendant base of this pendant that attaches to the ceiling is a smaller sized pendant base..The base of the pendant that I was replacing was a larger base, so when I attached this smaller base, I had to touch up with paint the ceiling because when I had painted my ceiling previously, the larger pendant base as in place. So when I attached this smaller pendant base, there was a ring of unpainted ceiling that I had to touch up with paint. But that issue aside, these pendants work fine but look fantastic.
